Foodie Backlash

Friday, August 13, 2010 - 12:46 PM

The Houston Press this week had more then one article bashing foodies with the skill and tactics used among the best of six graders.  Surely these are the same people who in fifth grade found the New Kids on the Block to be all the rage, only to shun them in 6th grade as their self doubt and desire to be cool took hold.  Of course, I am sure the playground beatings didn’t help much and thus scarred them for life.  The Houston Press obviously has no clue what a foodie is. In fact their description of a foodie seemed to be more of a mirror image of themselves.  They are the ones now afraid to call themselves a foodie for fear that the term may no longer be cool.   They even suggest that they want to be called food nerds, and they call foodies vain?  A foodie is someone who enjoys everything about food and the experiences that go along with it.  A foodie likes to learn about the history of the food and the culture of the people.  As I have stated before, a true foodie can be just as happy experiencing great street food as they can be in a Michelin starred restaurant.  Along the way, many foodies have stepped into the 21st century and now take pictures of their food. This usually is only so they can share their experiences with other foodies that couldn’t be there with them.  Food is about bringing people together. What is wrong with sharing pictures of food? It can often bring people together that otherwise may not have met. Maybe they should have read Slashfood’s definition of a foodie. http://www.slashfood.com/2006/02/10/what-is-a-foodie-anyway/ My message to the Houston Press is go ahead and be nerds, or dorks for that matter.  I will stand with being a foodie.  In the words of Julia Child, “Do not be afraid!”  It’s okay to be a foodie. Really.
